Bio

Carolyn E. Hansen combines extensive international and domestic commercial law and trade law experience with mediation skills and a decade of work in the nonprofit sector.  Her clients are commercial entities, non-profit organizations, municipalities and individuals.  Mediation services are provided for commercial matters and personal or family matters.  She is expert in cross-cultural negotiations and has advised or negotatied commercial transactions in over 40 countries.  She also provides service in environmental law.  
 
Carolyn received a JD in 1972 from the University of Michigan and an LL.M. in international and comparative law, cum laude, in 1973  from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium.  Her mediation training in 2001 was by Ulster Sullivan Mediation, affiliated with the New York State Dispute Resolution Association, of which she is a board member.  For fifteen years, from early 1973 through 1987 she was in-house, international counsel in succession for three corporations, Johnson Wax: A Family Company, Schering-Plough Corporation and head of the international law department of Ralston Purina Company.  For almost 12 years, from early 1988 to late 1999 she had her own law consulting firm in Taipei, Taiwan and primarily represented North American and European companies doing business in Asia.  In Taiwan she became involved in non-profit work promoting sustainable development and founded Earthplace Association and the Taiwan Business Council for Sustainable Development. The latter is affiliated with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.  She also served as the Taiwan agent for Worldwatch Institute, launching its books in Chinese and hosting Lester Brown at a national conference on sustainable development.  She currently serves on the boards of non-profit organizations promoting mediation, sustainable development, community supported agriculture and international trade.  She participated in the 2001 Spirituality, Law and Politics retreat at the Sleeping Lady Resort in Washington State.  She is a board member of the International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers, a founder of the Renaissance Lawyer Society and Treasurer of the Mid-Hudson Chapter of the New York Women's Bar Association.  
 
While in Taiwan she practiced and taught Chan (Zen) meditation and began studies at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, which is now a college in the state of Florida.  In June 2003 she graduated from that school. She is a Brennan Healining Science Practitioner and is continuing her education in healing in the BBSH advanced eduction/teacher training program. In Taiwan she received training in facilitating the Foundation for Community Encouragement model of community building. 
 
Ms Hansen speaks Mandarin Chinese, has a working knowledge of Spanish and reads French.  She has published and spoken on various law topics and sustainable development and has received awards from academic institutions and non-profit organizations.
