Bio
In 1999, in a transformation training program, I
created a promise
for the world:
I promise a world at peace
by 2012; where all people realize their
interconnectedness and honor conflict as an opportunity
for transformation.
I also promise a world that works for all by 2040.
For some people, creating such a promise in a course, would
be an
interesting exercise and they would go on with their normal
lives. My
promise altered the path of my life and I began to inquire
about how to
fulfill it. I was practicing law in a small town in North
Carolina at the
time and I began to inquire about how I, a lawyer, might
possibly be a
peace-maker. Soon, it became obvious that I was in a unique
position to do
so. I created an inquiry and a series of projects around
the question:
What if lawyers were peace-makers,
problem-solvers, and healers of
conflict?
The more I inquired, the
more excited I became. I saw that lawyers were in
the unique position of being able to make amazing changes
by interacting
with the clients to bring connection and healing, rather
than the
separation and pain that adversarial litigation often brings.
As I had
this conversation with other lawyers, I saw that they were
hungry for it.
Eventually, I brought together many of the lawyers who
were inspired by
connecting, healing, bringing peace and solving problems.
We called
ourselves The Renaissance Lawyer Society and we were recently
granted 501c3
non-profit status by the IRS. On the web site, which I
wrote, we have
identified over a dozen different models, trends, and approaches
that are
transforming the legal profession. [This group is one of
them.] After being involved in Renaissance Lawyer Society for several years, I struck out on my own and spent two or three years developing an on-line magazine, community and documentary website. More
information is available at www.cuttingedgelaw.com.
I often write for bar journals
and other periodicals, often as co-author
with others. My article, co-authored with Dolly Garlo,
on Law As a Healing
Profession has been reprinted several times, including
the cover story of
the Oregon Bar Bulletin in April, 2003. See the article
at www.osbar.org/publications/bulletin/03apr/healing.html I have been
interviewed and my work has been written about in several
other periodicals
including IONS, November, 2002, and Science of Mind, February,
2003.
Besides my working on CuttingEdgeLaw.com, I also coach lawyers on bringing balance and peace-making
skills into their law practices, see www.consciouscoach.com. Most of my clients also speak and write
about the movement to transform the legal profession. We
look for
opportunities to ‘walk the talk’ in their own
lives and practices.
I offer continuing
legal education programs on collaborative law, restorative justice, and other values-based, purposeful practices, usually
getting credit in the area of ethics and professionalism.
I still sometimes work with North Carolina clients on
divorce, reconciliation, and relationship issues. I help
them reconnect with each other and create workable relationships
with their partners, children, or co-parents. It provides
me with a field for applying my theories about honoring
conflict as an opportunity for transformation.
I raised eight children
in a blended family and took in the children of the village. A total of sixteen children lived with me between 1977 and 2003.
