Summary of the August 2002 Retreat

[This summary was prepared for participants in last year’s and this year’s retreats of the Project for Integrating Spirituality, Law, and Politics.]

"So it has come at last, the distinguished thing.” These are alleged to be the last words of the great novelist Henry James—somehow it seems appropriate in presenting to all of you the summary of our Labor Day retreat that I feel I’ve been working on for a lifetime (with help from Nanette Schorr). I am sending it to all of you who attended either the Retreat of 2001, held at the Sleeping Lady conference center in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, or this past summer’s retreat at the Marconi Conference Center on California's Tomales Bay, and, as was the case when I sent out the first part of this summary, Wendy Ervin and I include below a list of who all of you are so that you can visualize the community that we are and are becoming.

Our hope is that this can be useful in informing the wider legal and non- legal public about the Project for Integrating Spirituality, Law, and Politics. By whatever means it is occurring quite a few people are coming to hear about our work, calling to request more information, asking to be put on mailing lists and otherwise find a way to participate in our efforts. Since this summary goes into a fair amount of depth and detail about the ideas we are discussing and to some extent about our plans and aspirations, I am intending to send it out to folks as an educational vehicle and to drum up support and excitement. So I’d appreciate it if you spirit/law/politics members of the Project send me back your reactions and any suggestions you may have for additional ways to publicize our work and gain support for it.

With all best wishes,

Peter
